Who do You want to Be Online?

In today’s digital world, this is the question I ask my clients.

As someone deeply immersed in personal branding, I’ve seen how our online personas are no longer optional—they’re essential. But crafting this presence is more than just showing up. It’s about aligning your professional and personal values into a strategy that authentically represents who you are.

I come from a generation that kept personal and professional worlds apart. Over my career—working with people across Europe, Asia, and North America—I’ve witnessed how cultural norms influence this balance. In some places, mixing business and personal life is unthinkable; in others, it’s just how things are done.

And then, thankfully, there’s Gen Z.

This digital-native generation is reshaping how we think about authenticity, both personal and professional. They wear their identities proudly, openly sharing their passions: “I can’t stay after 6 PM because I’m gaming, volunteering, or singing in a choir.” Their transparency is refreshing, setting a new standard for how individuals—and brands—present themselves online.

This evolution isn’t just a trend; it’s a reflection of the H2H (Human-to-Human) Marketing mindset. H2H recognizes that customers, employees, and partners are more than their “work hats”—they’re people with diverse priorities. And this applies to your online presence too. Your audience—whether it’s coworkers, your boss, or your customers—doesn’t want a perfect, polished mask. They want you.

The role of personal branding

Personal branding is critical here. Yes, it’s possible to hide behind avatars or carefully curated personas. But even then, today’s audience—colleagues, employers, clients—expects authenticity. They’re looking for a cohesive, human-centered story that reflects not just your expertise but also your values and passions.

The Digital you

The challenge today isn’t whether you want to exist online; it’s deciding how to exist. How do you balance professionalism with authenticity? How do you bring your full self to the table, blending your work and personal worlds seamlessly?

This is the future of personal branding: moving beyond the divide between “work you” and “real you” to create an online presence that’s genuinely, unapologetically you.
